Hello Rachel. Please try these steps:

1) If the scanner used to work previously try rebooting Windows first. It helps pretty often.
2) If it still does not work after reboot, open the scanner selection dialog. Little black triangle under the Scan button will let you launch the scanner selection dialog. Most scanners offer WIA and TWAIN interface as well, try both interfaces.
3) Find the scanner's official webpage, download and install a fresh device driver software. You may need to reboot again and/or select the scanner device in AutoSplitter as seen in step #2.
4) If the scanner is connected through wifi, try connecting directly via cable.
